Ebay Score!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a chance on a guying selling Morgans all different dates. He states buy three lots of 10 morgans at 15.50 a coin and get a Carson City. He advised that he purchased a lot from an couple who cleaned some or all of the coins. Therefore he was selling them cheap. I bought six lots spend $930for 60 Morgan's but got 10% back from 8% back from live and 2% from ebay. I now wish I purchased all 18 lots. Scored three 1903 O Morgans, 1885 CC Morgan and 1883 CC Morgan. Only one of the coins is a 1921. 14 other Morgan are key or semi key dates.

Scan look good. How are they in person?

They all look excellent even if they are cleaned they don't appear worn at all.

cleaned kills numi value.
Still a good deal.

Enjoy,

Did you weight them to make sure they arent fakes? 85CC are commonly faked

How does the pictured coin weight out? I purchased a fake from e-bay for $1.99 - seller from Hong Kong. It was sold as a fake, but looked so good in the pictures that I decided to purchase it. The fake weighs out at 25.3 grams and a real coin at 26.6 to 26.7 grams (my scale only goes to the nearest 10th of a gram).

Yes, that deal sounds too good to be true. I would suggest you take all of them to a professional and have them authenticated. 1903 O, 1885 CC, and the rest of the Semi-Key dates are all commonly counterfeited by the Chinese.

Btw, I can only tell so much from those mediocre quality pictures you posted, and I'm not a professional numismatist, but both of those coins look cast to me.

Don't want to beat a dead horse but the pics make the coins look suspect (cast) to me also.

Even if cleaned - and IF they are truly somewhat KEY - get 'em slabbed by ANACS (or whomever does it NOW in addition) sell 'em back on Ebay and have more fun.

Also if they are fakes - you'll find out QUICKLY too - sadly.

I don't know if this is significant, but when I analyzed your photo of the Morgan, the program found a microdot under the earlobe. I had this dot magnified and the bitmap reconstructed using an intelligent algorithm. Here's what came up:

If they are fake, the good news is that ebay has specific guidelines on how to get your money back. File a dispute, claim the coins are SNAD(Significantly not as described) and fake. Send then coins back with delivery confirmation and you will be refunded the money.

Last I heard the fakes are still silver bullion. No numi value but not all would be lost, either.

Edit: In fact, according to my math, if they are indeed 90% silver "rounds" then there is 54ozt there and he paid 930*0.9=$837 meaning $15.50/ozt.

As bullion, the OP paid $18.07 per troy ounce which is highish short term, but OK long term, as silver will go much higher in time - at least that's what Izzy says!

Quite right except your math ignored the 10% cashback.

Edit: And then you changed your math, lol, I bet you figured it for .999 the 1st go round.

Have you even seen or handled a fake Morgan? I have one, like I post above, it weighs out at 25.3 grams instead of the expected 26.7 grams. I am sure that all types of forgeries exist. Mine is not made out of silver.

Where is the OP on all this? And scales are easy. I paid $25 bucks for mine at a head shop, good to the nearest 10th of a gram. I hear that O'house makes a fantastic scale.

No you silly man! I was confused by the OP's description of the discount and added 10, 2 and 8 until I realized that he meant 10 = 8 +2. So, only 10% discount. And Morgans have uncirculated silver content of 0.7736 ounce per coin.:ok:

I have read that many Morgan fakes are not silver but rather some alloy that may be silver plated.

The digital scale I use is this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/US-Balance-Pocke...lenotsupported

I believe Harbor Freight sells them for $10 and many times coin supply guys at coin shows have them for about $10-$15 in case someone wants to save a few bucks and get something that works just fine.

I agree that on balance the OP did OK even if the coins smell like Colonel Tso's Chicken.....and if they are in fact "90% silver." They are nice novelty coins and reflect a high levle of craftmanship. I've always wanted a genuine Carson City Morgan - mamboni's Jonesing just a wee bit.

I do too, but I'm going to spring for one thats been graded years ago and in the sealed plastic thing. And it will be bought in person from an aged, established coin snob who is rude and hates bullion.

Thanks for the heads up. I emailed another buyer and he stated that he is 90% sure they are fakes. He gave me the seller's phone number and I gave him a call. I called him at 6:20am. I'm surprised I got an answer. His wife answered the phone. She stated that John was sleeping and was it important. I said yes that I was calling from Indiana and the John sold me some couterfeit coins. I got John of the phone and he stated that he didn't know they were fakes and he would return my money. I think he knew exactly what he had and no one would find out.

Well that was this morning and still no refund. I talked with paypal twice on the phone and filed a dispute on line. They said that it will be no problem and they will take care of it. I have had to do this before and they made in right. I don't agree with sending the coins back to the seller though. These coins don't say replica therefore aren't they counterfeit US currency? Just so happens my girlfriends cousin works for the US Secret Service out of Indy. She told me that he was just in Fort Wayne a month ago regarding counterfeit FRN's. I don't think trying to make a few grand on ebay is worth having the Feds after you. By the way he also sent them via USPS isn't that another violation? Thanks for all your help.

He'll refund, thats part of the scam.If he sells 10 sets and 4 spot them as fakes he's still way ahead. I had a guy sell me a fake credit suisse 10 gram bar and when I called him on it he sent me a postal money order for the full amount and the shipping the same day.
And then kept selling the fakes.:banghead:

Before you even bid on ebay, DYODD on the item that you are bidding on and the ebay seller feedback as well. Do not mess with any seller with less than 99% on the feedback.

Scales and calipers are your best bet after you buy the item on ebay. Most of those ebay "sharks" sellers are from china and you never know what you might get when you bid on an item from these ebay "sharks" from China. I sometimes buy stuff on ebay but I do not mess with the China ebay "sharks" because it is too much hassle and red tape if that item is not as described.

Re: Ebay Score!!!!!!!!!!!!

not buying from sellers from china is a given, but sometimes items pop up from unsuspecting sellers from the US, who originally bought from china and have 99%+ feedback.

I'm surprised that the chinese haven't started using 90% silver blanks and have the correct weight down on these copies or used some other compound that mimics the correct weight better. I'm leery of reliance on the scale/caliper test on silver items.

You have a point there on that. There is not much that a person can do except dispute it with paypal and ebay if there is a problem and hope that a refund can be given to the ebay buyer. The only other way to test an item would be to melt it down but that would defeat the purpose of buying it in the first place.

There is no good solutions except to either 1.) not buy it on ebay and buy it locally from a reputable coin dealer or 2.) Dispute the item with paypal and ebay and hope that a person can get their money back.

Doing research in an item before bidding on ebay IMO still your best bet against potential problems on ebay.

DING DING DING! I always look several pages back into a sellers bought items before I add them to the list of sellers I will bid on.
Many times there was a purchase from hong kong or china in the past of a seller with great prices on proof SAE's or Morgans etc.
Scary out there if you don't know what you are doing.

Your obviously not the brightest light in the house by buying these coins thinking you scored. Don't go trying to rat the guy out to your little moronic fed buddy. You got your money back now if you want to take it further then be a man and deal with it yourself.

People need to stop blaming others and take a little bit of adult responsibility.

"Oh it is those evil counterfeiters" well if you used your brain and do some research you wouldn't buy them. the counterfeiters make fakes because dumbasses pay for them thinking they "scored".

People can try and sell whatever bullshit they want to you, this however does not mean you have to buy or for it.

Be sure to include it in your report to the SS. The seller probably bought the coins in one of those "secret" back rooms on Canal Street...

I take full responsibilty for my actions. The seller I bought from had 400 plus all positive feedback. Seller was from the United States. Seller listed them as "MORGAN DOLLARS US CURRENCY 90% SILVER". Seller listed them as Morgan Dollars Cleaned and that was why he listed them so cheaply. Three other buyers used the buy it now. One of the other buyers told me he's been collecting coins for 46 years. It is my fault the seller was a complete and total fraud I guess that makes me a dumbass. If you ever got a great opportunity to make a great deal on something now I know you would turn it down. And yes when ever I'm ripped off I will report it to the FED, State Police, City Police, Sheriff Dept, even Animal Control if needed. I'll do my little part so hopefully nobody else gets ripped off. Problem is nobody does sh*t any more and just likes to complain. I take action when I'm ripped off. If needed I would have driven 600 miles to the guys house. I guess you shouldn't buy anything on ebay because everything counterfeit. Your logic makes no sense. By the way I have gotten great deals on ebay with legit items with legit sellers.

I have also gotten a few good deals on ebay. Like with everything else, you have to DYODD. Everybody has gotten ripped off at some point in their life. What really matters is how a person handles the fact that they got ripped off and what lessons they learned when they got ripped off (ex: checking the ebay feedback more closely before bidding). The money lost in getting ripped off will not matter in the long run. What matters in the long run is how you handle being ripped off and what lessons you have learned as a result of being ripped off. Just my 2 cents.

stop your whinging you little bitch. excuses excuses, complaining followed by more excuses.

deal with it yourself or STFU. unbelievable how a suppose "american" actually thinks calling the feds on someone is something to be proud of. do you even know who the feds:thumpdown are, funny you should mention logic.

by the way no one cares what or how the guy ripped you off (anyone with a brain reading this thread would come to the conclusion YOU ARE A DUMBASS! that does not really require any debate), just your crappy story the point is be a grown up for once and don't run to big daddy crying.
